Filmed at the 1992 Salzburg Festival and conducted by Sir Georg Solti, this performance of Richard Strauss's opera features the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and vocalists Thomas Moser, Cheryl Studer and Marjana Lipovsek in the lead roles. Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal collaborated with Strauss on the fertility-themed opera, which centers on an enchanted empress who will lose her emperor unless she finds her own shadow.
