Sujata

In the midst of a cholera epidemic, Brahmin couple Upendra (Tarun Bose) and Charu (Sulochana Latkar) take in an "untouchable" baby. The child, Sujata, grows up to attract the attention of a young suitor, but her caste background casts a heavy shadow on the pairing. Also starring Sunil Dutt and Lalita Pawar, this 1959 melodrama from director Bimal Roy remains a probing critique of India's caste system.
