New York City homemaker Rita (Joanne Woodward, who won a BAFTA Best Actress Award) is tortured by her own aloofness and empty lifestyle. Her unfolding emotional crisis forces her to reexamine her childhood, as well as her problematic relationships with her demanding mother (Sylvia Sidney, in a performance nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar), her husband (Martin Balsam), her alienated daughter and estranged son (Ron Richards).
