When her lover abandons her, pregnant Sharada (Sharmila Tagore) is left to raise her child on her own -- a task made more difficult by India's social structure, which condemns Sharada and her illegitimate daughter, Swati (Meenakshi Sheshadri). Years later, a grown-up Swati is eager for her mother to be happy and encourages her to wed a compassionate, upstanding man (Shashi Kapoor) … but it seems fate may have other plans.
