In this coming-of-age drama, macho truck driver Karl Stover (Cameron Mitchell) takes his quiet son, Buddy (played by Mitchell's real-life son, Channing), on a hunting trip to make him a man. Things start looking up for Buddy when he becomes romantically involved with honky-tonk barmaid Fay (Maureen McCormick). But after Karl commits an unforgivable act, Buddy is forced out of his shell -- with violent results.
