Against all odds, lone wolf Andreas (Max von Sydow) strikes up a hesitant friendship with crippled widow Anna (Liv Ullmann), who is introduced to him by married friends (Bibi Andersson, Erland Josephson) with their own difficulties. Andreas and Anna fall in love, but shocking revelations threaten their bliss. Painful truths about their past lead to a violent outburst that cripples their connection. Ingmar Bergman directs.
