Wellman's gritty drama centers on Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle (Burgess Meredith) as he follows an American infantry platoon from North Africa to Italy to report the soldiers' stories from the front lines during World War II. In an Oscar-nominated supporting performance, Robert Mitchum plays the unit's battle-weary but unflinching commanding officer, Capt. Bill Walker.
