Photographer Jean (Catherine McCormack) is drawn into the history of an 1873 double murder of two sisters when she's charged with traveling to New Hampshire to examine the scene of the crime and take photos of surviving evidence. Joining her are her husband, Thomas (Sean Penn), his brother, Rich (Josh Lucas), and Rich's girlfriend, Adeline (Elizabeth Hurley). As she does her research, she begins to suspect her husband may be cheating on her.
