Director Roberto Rossellini shows how the powerful Medici family fostered science and the arts in Renaissance Italy in this impressive trilogy, part of his ambitious effort to document Western civilization's evolution. Originally produced for television, the films focus on merchant prince Cosimo de' Medici -- who manipulated the church and the government to further his business and personal goals -- and on architect Leon Battista Alberti.
