When local Nazi officials offer to make his severe financial troubles go away, small-town butcher and ordinary German citizen Albert Teetjen (Erwin Geschonneck) reluctantly agrees to execute four Communists in return for the favor. But regret soon consumes the butcher, and broken Nazi promises drive the man to another desperate act. Falk Harnack directs this dark drama based on the novel by Arnold Zweig.
