The Bridge of San Luis Rey

Based on Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this 1944 film is set in 18th-century Peru, where a rope bridge collapses, sending five people plummeting to their deaths. The entire city is horrified, and a young priest (Donald Woods) wants to know why God chose those five people to die. To answer this question, the priest must know something about the people themselves, so he begins to delve into their personal lives.
