When Nina (Isa Pola) decides to give up her husband (Emilio Cigoli) for her lover (Adriano Rimoldi), she leaves behind her wounded 4-year-old son (Luciano De Ambrosis). Shuttled between his aunt and his grandmother, the child develops a serious illness, which ultimately brings his mother back -- and forces her to put her family first. But while on a trip to the Italian Riviera, the family's tenuous reconciliation takes a turn for the worst.
