British director Michael Winterbottom transforms Thomas Hardy's 1886 novel The Mayor of Casterbridge into a meditative, snowbound Western in the spirit of director Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) has risen to power as the benign mayor of the frontier town Kingdom Come. But is a long-buried secret destined to destroy him? Nastassja Kinski co-stars as Elena, Dillon's wife.
