Jean-Paul Sartre's big-screen adaptation of Arthur Miller's stirring play comes to life in this French drama starring Simone Signoret as a 17th-century Puritan woman accused of witchcraft by her husband's ex-lover. The subsequent trial incites a maelstrom of hysteria and suspicion in the Salem, Mass., community. Sigornet took home a BAFTA Award for her role in this powerful metaphor for the anticommunism fervor of the McCarthy era.
