After being introduced to the handsome and brave soldier Montriveau (Guillaume Depardieu), bored and married socialite Antoinette de Langeais (Jeanne Balibar) decides to toy with the man's emotions. Montriveau falls for Antoinette and cannot escape her powerful control. The crafty Antoinette exhibits great skill and a complete lack of compassion in her cruel maneuverings with the severely smitten soldier.
