The Element of Crime

  (1984)
Forbrydelsens Element
Danish director Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) makes his English-language directorial debut with this bizarre combination of film noir, science fiction and surrealism surrounding a series of gruesome murders. In a post-holocaust future (depicted in striking sepia tones), a serial killer preys on teenage girls. The stymied detective on the case (Michael Elphick) submits to a special form of hypnosis to improve his chances of catching the culprit.
