Walter Matthau won an Oscar for his role as Willie Gingrich, a crooked attorney who foresees a financial windfall when Cleveland Browns star "Boom Boom" Jackson (Ron Rich) accidentally levels cameraman Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon), Gingrich's brother-in-law. Barely hurt, Hinkle is loath to help Gingrich scam the insurance company until he realizes the money might lure back his ex. But a budding rapport with Jackson begins gnawing at his conscience.
