The stirring music of Sergei Rachmaninoff provides the soundtrack to this documentary on the composer's life and work, explored in part through home movies provided by Rachmaninoff's grandson and readings of his notes by John Gielgud. Filmmaker Tony Palmer provides new footage of Russia, Switzerland and the United States, and the Kirov Orchestra, which worked with Rachmaninoff during his lifetime, performs under the direction of Valery Gergiev.
