The High and the Mighty

On a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco, a plane develops engine trouble, and it falls to steady, controlled co-pilot Dan Roman to land the craft safely when smug pilot John Sullivan loses his nerve. Meanwhile, the 22 passengers aboard take stock of their lives in William Wellman's tautly directed granddaddy of airplane disaster movies, which bagged an Oscar for the film's haunting score.
