Chauffeur Steven Ledbetter (Robert Shaw) works for the widow Lady Franklin (Sarah Miles) in this romantic drama based on L.P. Hartley's novel. When his fragile employer has a nervous breakdown, Ledbetter helps her overcome illness and depression. But as she recovers, the driver finds he has feelings for her that are unacceptable in their strict hierarchical society. The film won three BAFTA Awards and the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
