After the Civil War ends, veteran Ralph Hartsook (Norman Foster) becomes a teacher in a small Indiana community. But things get complicated for Hartsook when he attempts to rid the town of corrupt politicians. Meanwhile, a band of outlaws tries to ride him out of town, and his attraction to Hannah (Charlotte Henry) puts him in conflict with hotheaded Bud (Fred Kohler Jr.) in this classic drama based on Edward Eggleston's best-selling novel.
