Mystery abounds in the first two film adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's classic novel. In 1931's The Maltese Falcon, detective Sam Spade (Ricardo Cortez) investigates the link between his partner's murder and the search for a jewel-encrusted falcon statue. Bebe Daniels co-stars as femme fatale Ruth Wonderly. 1936's loose variation Satan Met a Lady features Ted Shayne (Warren William) and Valerie Purvis (Bette Davis) hunting an antique ram's horn.
