The Merchant of Venice
(1973)|
One of Shakespeare's most divisive plays gets the Laurence Olivier treatment as he takes on the role of anguished Jewish usurer Shylock, who demands a pound of nobleman Antonio's (Anthony Nicholls) flesh if he doesn't repay the 3,000 ducats he's loaned. A foray into the anti-Semitism-entrenched 16th century, writer-director John Sichel's vibrant made-for-television film also stars Joan Plowright as Portia and Jeremy Brett as Bassanio.
