Mori (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) and his wife, Vittoria (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), live a comfortable life at their country estate. But Vittoria struggles with depression, and when her baby is born, she's unable to produce milk or show the infant the least bit of love. So, Mori hires Annetta (Maya Sansa) as a wet nurse and nanny. Leaving her own child and a jailed lover behind, Annetta touches Mori with her beauty and her affection for the child.
