The Patriot

Count Pahlen (Lewis Stone) is a friend and ally of Czar Paul I (Emil Jannings), but he's starting to question both the czar's ability to rule and the condition of Russia in the 18th century. For the good of his nation, Pahlen joins a plot to assassinate his friend. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch (who was best known for his romantic comedies), this historical drama received five Oscar nods and won for Best Screenplay.
