Charlotte Mullen (Sorcha Cusack), a 40-something spinster, has made up in wit what she lacked in social position or wealth and gained the respect of the landed gentry in the small western Ireland town in which she lives. But her comfortable life is about to take a drastic turn in this Masterpiece Theatre miniseries adaptation of the classic Irish novel by Edith Somerville and Martin Ross.
