Told through a nested episodic narrative, this macabre epic fantasy follows Belgian cavalry officer Alfonse Van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski) on a string of occult adventures as he travels across Spain near the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Along the way, the valiant Van Worden encounters a pair of Moorish princesses who seduce him, a gypsy and demonic ghosts. Adapted from a 19th century novel by Jan Patocki, the film has become a cult favorite.
