Filmed in Spain with a German-speaking cast, Wim Wenders's adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel set in 17th-century Salem, Mass., brings an outsider's perspective to the bigotry and behavior of early-American immigrants. Senta Berger provides a riveting portrayal of adulteress Hester Prynne; Lou Castel plays the tortured Rev. Dimmesdale; and Hans Christian Blech plays Hester's long-absent husband.
