The Sicilian

  (1987)
Director Michael Cimino's adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel stars Christopher Lambert as Salvatore Giuliano, who takes on the church, the government and the mob to foster Sicily's separation from Italy in the late 1940s. As Giuliano's popularity grows, he lets his ego grow along with it, leading him to disregard his Mafia backers' power -- and he soon finds himself in a fight for survival. Terence Stamp and John Turturro also star.
