The Sin of Madelon Claudet

  (1931)
Edgar Selwyn helmed this tearjerker about naive French lass Madelon Claudet (Helen Hayes, in an Oscar-winning turn), who falls for an American artist (Neil Hamilton), only to be cast aside when she ends up pregnant. Things go from bad to worse when she's charged as a jewel thief's accomplice and lands in jail. Released after 10 years, Madelon secretly provides financial support for her son the only way possible: by selling herself on the streets.
