Two young girls are sent to live with an aunt (Isabella Rossellini) in Tuscany when their parents are killed in a car crash during World War II. Married to a German Jewish intellectual (Jereon Krabbe), the aunt teaches the girls about the beauty of art and music despite the cacophony and horrors of war.
