A family patriarch's will has profound consequences for his son Cesare (Richard Burton) in legendary director Vittoria de Sica's last film. In keeping with his father's wishes, Cesare allows his brother to marry his own beloved, Adriana (Sophia Loren). But after his brother dies unexpectedly, Cesare realizes he has another chance to attain his heart's desire -- if destiny will allow it to happen this time.
