Based on Pat Conroy's autobiographical novel, this Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation traces the best-selling author's early career as an elementary schoolteacher on an island off the coast of South Carolina. Innovative and idealistic, the young Conroy (Jeff Hephner) butts heads with the school's principal (Alfre Woodard, in an Emmy-nominated performance), a strict martinet whose traditional ideas about education clash with his own approach.
