Novelist Tony Barrett (Gary Cooper) is in a creative slump until he meets neighboring Polish immigrant Manya Novak (Anna Sten). Newly inspired, Barrett bases a story on the beautiful Manya -- and soon finds himself falling in love. But he discovers too late that her upcoming arranged marriage to the brutish Fredrik Sobieski (Ralph Bellamy) will keep them from being together in director King Vidor's tale of forbidden romance.
