The Whisperers
(1967)|
In this disturbing portrayal of the debilitating effects of aging and isolation, Dame Edith Evans (who won a BAFTA Best British Actress Award) is a revelation as a lonely elderly woman besieged by harsh realities who has only her paranoid fantasies -- she thinks she's being spied upon -- to keep her company. A study in social realism, this gritty evocation of working-class English slums is enhanced by a suitably moody score by John Barry.
