Struggling to feed his family, relentless Squarciò (Yves Montand) makes a better living than other fishermen in his tiny Italian village by using homemade bombs. Squarcio's peers tolerate his dangerous ways, but a new coast guard captain is determined to catch him. Director Gillo Pontecorvo's debut feature is a moving neorealist drama that features vibrant color photography and a commanding performance by Montand.
