After resigning from his job after a child dies durning a school trip, compassionate math teacher and widower Shuhei (Chishû Ryû) spends the rest of his life sacrificing his time, energy and own happiness to provide his only son, Ryohei (Shûji Sano), with a quality education. Directed by master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, this touching family drama also stars Shin Saburi, Takeshi Sakamoto and Mitsuko Mito.
