Set in unsettled postwar England, where crime is on the upsurge, Alberto Cavalcanti's Brit noir gangland drama stars Trevor Howard as Clem, an ex-serviceman who's fed up after World War II and drawn to the excitement of black-marketeering. But his psychopathic, sadistic gang boss, Narcy (Griffith Jones), betrays Clem when he refuses to deal in drugs, and the engrossing story soon becomes a breathtaking tale of revenge.
