Based on Noel Coward's titular play, the movie chronicles the ups and downs of the large, British, lower-class Gibbons family (Stanley Holloway, Celia Johnson, John Mills and Kay Walsh) during the transitional period between the two world wars (1919-1939). Although the clan endures such hardships as class strife and labor conflicts, these troubles are balanced by the joy of being part of a loving family. David Lean's first solo directing job.
