In her big-screen debut, Hayley Mills steals the show as tomboyish 12-year-old Gillie, a habitual liar who witnesses a murder and then finds herself in trouble after retrieving the gun abandoned by the killer (Horst Buchholz). Instead of impressing Gillie's playmates, the weapon draws the attention of the town's top cop (Hayley's real-life father, John Mills), who's investigating the homicide and wants to know how she got her hands on the gun.
