It's 1645 and King Charles I (Rupert Everett) has been deposed from the throne in the English Civil War. Gen. Thomas Fairfax (Dougray Scott) and his austere deputy Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth) disagree on how they should rebuild their shattered England. Their complex friendship is put to the test, especially when Cromwell suspects Fairfax's wife (played by Olivia Williams) of sympathizing with the imprisoned yet still raucous former monarch.
