When he nobly stands up for a laid-off co-worker, Shinji Okajima (Tokihiko Okada) is fired and denied his year-end bonus. The repercussions come quickly when his stay-at-home wife (Emiko Yagumo) and children absorb the news in this affectionate family comedy. Clever slapstick and heartrending drama combine with exquisite results in this early work from acclaimed Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu.
