Director Kon Ichikawa used more than 150 cameramen to capture the indelible artistry, passion and beauty of the 1964 Summer Olympics in this groundbreaking documentary commissioned by the Japanese government. The stylized film uses close-ups, still photographs, slow motion and other techniques to heighten the drama, culminating in the marathon won by Ethiopian runner Abebe Bikila, who powerfully overtook his competitors.
