On a snowbound Soviet air force base at the height of World War II, a group of soldiers does domestic battle with their wives and girlfriends while awaiting word for deployment onto the actual battlefield. Director Semyon Aranovich weaves historical combat footage into his acclaimed, poignant war tale, based on the short stories of Russian author Yuri German and starring Rodion Nahapetov, Aleksei Zharkov and Andrei Boltnev.
