Casey has turned away from her family to work as a longshorewoman and live with her social-worker girlfriend, Alex, but when Casey visits home at Christmas, she finds that her family's ways have not changed. Although it's clear that Casey has fallen deeply in love with Alex, her family is more judgmental than ever, and drama and emotions fly as two very different lifestyles try hard to find common ground on the beautiful coast of New England.
