Don Mankiewicz adapted his novel for this provocative courtroom drama about a Mexican youth (Rafael Campos) charged with killing a white girl -- and facing small-town bigotry and a lynch-mob mindset. The boy and his lawyer (Glenn Ford) enlist communist attorney Barney Castle (Arthur Kennedy, in an Oscar-nominated performance) to manage the defense … only to become dupes in his scheme to create a martyr for the Red cause.
