Jobless ex-boxer Alan Darcy (Bob Hoskins) borrows money from a gangster to set up a boxing club in his gritty, working-class town. Proposed as a gang-prevention strategy, the club is slow to find members, but through Alan's resourcefulness and persistence, he assembles a rowdy team of young fighters. Once their first public match is scheduled, Alan turns up the heat on their already rigorous training regimen.
