Recipient of the Best Director award at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, Pavel Lungin lenses this historical drama focusing on the relationship between Ivan the Terrible and Philip II, metropolitan bishop of Moscow. Pyotr Mamonov -- front man of rock band Zvuki Mu and star of two previous Lungin films -- plays the murderous czar, and Oleg Yankovskiy plays Philip, one of the few men to openly challenge Ivan's authority.
