With hardship lapping at her doorstep, a French widow (Isabelle Huppert) living in 1930s French Indochina is forced to make a difficult decision to ensure her family's security. A wealthy Chinese man (Randal Douc) has eyes for her teenage daughter (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) but agreeing to let him woo the girl would go against all social convention. Cambodian director Rithy Panh helms this lush adaptation of Marguerite Duras's classic novel.
