After his father marries a teenage bride, 12-year-old Ondrej is banished from the household and sent to live and study with a strict religious order. It isn't long before the boy begins to reflect on existential matters and question his fundamental set of beliefs. Exploring the nature of faith and doubt, Czechoslovakian director Frantisek Vlacil's poetic rumination set during the Middle Ages packs a dramatic wallop.
